Managing Stress + Developing Peace of Mind
The experience of stress is one that, as humans, we're pretty much guaranteed to have. Whether it's stressful experiences from the past or ones we are currently in the midst of, we're all bound to have our fair share. We all handle stress differently and have varying levels of tolerance, but none of us escape it completely.
Sometimes we're not even aware of how stressful a situation really is because we've developed defense mechanisms that keep us from fully seeing it.
Along with our defense mechanisms, over time, we've also developed other strategies to manage the stress from all the different areas of our lives. Some of us have also developed lifestyle habits that support our emotional well-being. However, stress continues to be a primary complaint for so many people.
It's important to keep in mind that stress is a natural, normal part of life and, in some cases, can provide a valuable push to act!
Healthy levels of stress can:
- Provide motivation to push through and work on important tasks
- Show us that something in our lives needs to change
- Provide momentum to keep us moving towards our goals
The more insight and understanding you have about stress, the easier it becomes to keep it manageable. Learn to:
- see the connection between stress and thinking traps
- limit unhelpful coping strategies (i.e. alcohol or drug use, procrastination, avoidance, overeating, etc.)
- focus on what is within your control
- effectively work with emotions in the moment
