Exploring Procrastination and Motivation

Picture
Core-level Coaching can set you on a path towards understanding why you procrastinate, even when you know it's going to cause problems, and then making positive changes so that you can follow through and achieve what you want!
Is procrastination and lack of motivation something you feel you struggle with? Welcome to the club!

Procrastination, very simply, is intentionally avoiding doing something that you know needs to be done.
It could be putting off making an appointment to have your oil changed, finding excuses why you can't start your paper or report, or choosing to avoid having a difficult conversation with someone.

We have a built-in, natural tendency to want to avoid anything that causes us to feel any level of discomfort.

And there's lots in life that make us uncomfortable!  So when we put something off enough times and succeed, momentarily, in avoiding that discomfort, it forms a pattern - a habit.

More on Procrastination...

People tend to link procrastination to "time management". While having a good system of planning and prioritization is a helpful life skill, it actually has little to do with procrastination.
To really make changes, we need to dive a little deeper into things like values, core beliefs, coping strategies, thinking traps, emotional reactions, etc.

People procrastinate when they:
  • are afraid to fail or to disappoint others
  • lack confidence in their ability to successfully complete a task
  • are feeling disorganized and don't know where to start
  • have an internal rule (belief) that they should be having fun or doing something enjoyable instead
  • feel overwhelmed and want to avoid uncomfortable emotions that come along with challenging themselves
Do any of these strike a chord?  These are only a few of the reasons behind procrastination.  Can you add to the list?

Participating in core-level coaching can help you look at procrastination through a holistic lens.  In many cases, procrastination is a defense mechanism.  But while it is keeping you "safe" by protecting you from uncomfortable emotions, it's also keeping you stuck and holding you back.

You can develop a new mindset that allows you to more easily follow through on the things you want to accomplish and experience!

Feedback from Coaching Clients
My biggest take-away so far is that my mind has a mind of its own! I'm starting to understand why I have the patterns I do in my life. It's feeling good to practice things that actually make me feel peaceful. (T.O., 52)
I've been to therapy, which helped at the time. But this feels different, like I've made changes that will allow me to handle challenging experiences now and in the future. Instead of feeling "helped" I felt mentored and guided in helping myself. (Charlotte N., 33)
Having the online modules has been so helpful. I feel like I'm learning so much that I can apply directly to what's going on with me. Being able to come to session knowing I can talk it all through makes it a seamless process. I really feel like emotionally, I'm the best I've ever been! (Peter V, 26)
I have learned so much about myself throughout this experience. I didn't realize how critical I was being about myself. The self-compassion exercises and understanding more about my self-talk has helped me understand how my behaviors and beliefs have been holding me back. This has really changed so much for me - thank you! (Sara, 46)
In my work with Bobbi, my perspective has started to change. I am focusing on the things I can control and letting go of the rest. I always called myself a "worrier", but I don't put that label on myself anymore. I can understand better now how my emotions are impacting me, but that I don't have to get taken over by them. (Kelly, 34)
