Procrastination and Motivation
Struggling with procrastination and feeling like you lack motivation? You are definitely not alone in that!
Procrastination, very simply, is intentionally avoiding doing something that you know needs to be done. It could be putting off making an appointment to have your oil changed, finding excuses why you can't start your paper or report, or choosing to avoid having a difficult conversation with someone. We have a built-in, natural tendency to want to avoid anything that causes us to feel any level of discomfort. And there's lots in life that make us uncomfortable! So when we do it enough times and succeed, momentarily, in avoiding that discomfort, it forms a pattern - a habit. |
People tend to link procrastination to "time management". While having a good system of planning and prioritization is a helpful life skill, it actually has little to do with procrastination.
To really make changes, we need to dive a little deeper into things like values, core beliefs, coping strategies, thinking traps, emotional reactions, etc.
