Becoming Mindful of Thoughts + Emotions
Feeling overwhelmed or disconnected? Do you sometimes feel like life is passing you by in a blur or you're getting by on auto-pilot?
People often mistake mindfulness as being a form of meditation or relaxation. But it is neither. Although feeling relaxed may be a by-product at times, it is not the main intention in practicing mindfulness. Instead, mindfulness means being awake to and actively engaged in the present-moment experience of your life, in an accepting and non-judgmental way.
Mindfulness brings awareness, shedding light on our habitual, unconscious behavior patterns and mindsets. This is empowering in that it allows you to choose your responses, here and now, instead of reacting automatically.
Some people go through their entire lives not realizing just how much control they actually have over how they experience things. We have more control over our mindset than we have grown to believe. We have control over where we choose to place our attention; we choose how and where to invest our time, energy, and effort; we choose what we hold onto and make part of our story and what we simply let go; and we choose the attitude and outlook that we bring to each situation.
